Placon Celebrates 60 Years of Packaging Innovation
Madison, WI (May 11, 2026) — Placon celebrates its 60th anniversary this month, marking a legacy of excellence in thermoformed plastic packaging design and manufacturing. Founded by Tom Mohs in 1966, the company has grown through innovative engineering and a relentless commitment to its customers. Today, Placon is a trusted global partner for sustainable packaging solutions across the food, retail, and medical markets.
From the beginning, Placon has pushed the boundaries of thermoforming by adapting technologies from the metal and paper industries into scalable equipment for repeatable, high-volume production. Among Placon’s early contributions to the industry were the first thermoformed retail clamshell, trim systems that introduced matched-metal technologies to thermoforming, and the pioneering use of 100% post-consumer recycled PET plastic in retail packaging. More recently, the company has won numerous design awards, including eight Ameristar and four WorldStar awards for innovative packaging design since 2019.
Owned by the second- and third-generation Mohs, Granato, and Klauck families, Placon remains proudly family-owned. “This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication and unwavering commitment of the thousands of Placon family members,” said Dan Mohs, Chairman and CEO of Placon. “Their commitment and old-fashioned hard work have fueled Placon’s success and reputation as the industry’s design leader.”
“We have always believed the best packaging designs are where art and engineering come together seamlessly,” said Dan Mohs. “Our thermoformed packaging not only protects products, but also creates clear, uninterrupted windows that enhance the consumer shopping experience. First, they help shoppers quickly decide whether a product captures their interest. Second, they provide the visual information needed to select the product.”
As Placon looks to the future, it remains focused on innovation and growth. By leveraging advanced manufacturing technologies and deep industry expertise, Placon will continue to succeed in the market by delivering high-value packaging solutions that meet the needs of a rapidly changing marketplace.
To commemorate the anniversary, Placon will host a series of events in May, including employee celebrations at its corporate headquarters in Wisconsin and its production facilities in Indiana, Massachusetts, and Minnesota.
