Placon Packaging Design Innovation Scores IOPP AmeriStar Awards in the Health and Beauty and Medical Device Categories
June 5th, 2013
MADISON, WI (June 19, 2013) – Placon, a leading North American designer and thermoformer of custom plastic packaging for the retail, medical and food markets, with an extensive line of stock products and environmentally-friendly extruded PET sheet, was honored to receive two Institute of Packaging Professionals (IOPP) AmeriStar awards for its Gillette Venus & Olay and Wright Medical submissions. The wins come on the heels of Placon’s DuPont Packaging award win for the “cutting edge” Venus women’s razor packaging project.
The Gillette Venus & Olay package primarily consists of three major components, a shallow and deep thermoformed insert co-designed by Gillette and manufactured by Placon as well as the printed lid and insert card co-designed by Control Group. The clever easy-open feature consists of a combination perforation/slit/finger tab opening produced in a single operation on high-speed thermoforming equipment. Once the outer blister is opened by the customer, undercuts on the exterior package are defeated for easy removal of the organizer tray. The inner tray is a thin-gauge thermoform that utilizes both sides of the tray to retain the razor’s components on multiple planes in multiple-sized cavities, a true tooling design masterpiece.
The Barger and Wright Medical Extremities Clamshell Package is a smartly-designed, user-friendly, single rigid thermoform that can be used in sterile and non-sterile presentations. Used in approximately 350 SKUs as part of the overall packaging configuration, the unique geometry of the small rigid thermoformed clamshell enables it to strike the right balance of protection, end-user satisfaction and cost-effective design that meets Wright Medicals’ form, fit and function for small parts, screws and plates.
States Laura Stewart, VP Sales and Marketing – Placon, “We are honored to receive the AmeriStar award for our innovative design and thermoforming work on the Gillette Venus & Olay and Wright Medical projects. Both are success stories that exemplified creativity in engineering and tooling design as well as the close collaboration we have with our customers in order to make the projects truly successful.”
Each year the IOPP commemorates the best packages of the year. AmeriStar winners are recognized for their ground-breaking contributions to the packaging industry during EastPack held in Philadephia, PA.
