Why Placon

INNOVATION

Since its inception in 1966, Placon has been reinvigorating the packaging industry with new ideas and innovations. From the BlisterBox package patented by our founder in 1980 to some of our more recent Ameristar and DuPont award-winning custom packaging, the Placon brand has never shied away from big, new ideas or challenges. With the constant goal of highlighting each of our customers’ products with easy-to-use, intuitive packages, we always strive to find the most cost-effective solutions while still putting shelf appearance first. Show us your product, and we’ll give it a package.

COLLABORATION

Here at Placon, we understand that each customer wants something different from their plastic package, which is why we always look to build strong communication between our team and yours. Whether you’d like to be matched with one of our wide selection of stock products or have a unique package designed just for you, our attentive customer service and sales teams are there to help you every step of the way. For more specialized products, we recently opened our Design Center of Excellence – a space at our Madison, WI headquarters in which the customer can come face-to-face with our design engineers to make a custom package that fits the form and function of the product inside. Our wide array of stock products and our tried-and-true method for custom product development ensure satisfaction for every customer and end user.

QUALITY

Placon is a company that has been verified to practice Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP), and we have the certifications to prove it. Our roots in the Midwestern values of our founder, Tom Mohs, haven’t changed for more than 50 years; effort and precision is concentrated in each of our packages, just as it was at Placon’s inception. We pride ourselves on the superior strength and clarity of our packaging materials, made with a meticulous attention to detail throughout our thermoforming process. Each and every package that leaves Placon’s doors has been inspected and perfected, no matter the customer or application. All of these ingredients together make for the highest quality package possible, time and time again.

SUSTAINABILITY

Placon is the only thermoformer in North America with an in-house recycling plant, which is located at our Madison, WI headquarters. Here, we effectively “close the loop” of the thermoforming process by grinding curbside-collected plastic bottles and thermoforms into flake, which is then extruded into PET sheet that can be used for new thermoforming applications. Sure, we could thermoform using brand-new plastic, but why would we, when our EcoStar plant allows us to save 1 billion plastic bottles from landfills per year? All of our PET stock products are made of EcoStar PET – which is made of up to 100% curbside recycled materials. This new resource allows us to significantly decrease our reliance on virgin materials, making us one of the most sustainable plastic thermoforming corporations in the United States.

From the first plastic jewelry box made in our founder’s basement to all of the innovations we currently have in the works, Placon has evolved and grown. Throughout all of our internal improvements and growth, we have kept the values of innovation, collaboration, quality, and sustainability at the forefront of our company’s goals. See for yourself; explore our website and watch our values come forward in every product and detail.

A sustainable path for plastic packaging

In 2011, Placon opened a state-of-the-art recycling facility dedicated to reclaiming and recycling curbside collected PET bottles and thermoforms destined for landfills. Every day the facility washes, grinds, and then extrudes the material into post-consumer EcoStar® recycled PET rollstock that is used by Placon for thermoforming brand new consumer packaged goods. The PET rollstock created in our EcoStar facility has earned a reputation for its superior clarity and performance characteristics, allowing Placon to significantly reduce our dependence on petroleum-based resources and create a continuous, closed-loop system for PET recycling.

Committed to conserving resources

Over 1 billion discarded consumer PET soda bottles, water bottles and plastic food and retail containers carrying the #1 symbol go through our recycling facility each year. These containers are ground, washed, then extruded into our EcoStar brand of PET sheet which is thermoformed back into consumer goods packaging helping conserve our planet’s valuable natural resources.
